Author Spotlight on Eric Carle: We Read For the Record!

On Thursday, October 8th, 2009, St. Andrews Regional Library Children's Services participated in the Jumpstart's national literacy program, Read For the Record, by reading this year's book selection, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, to 73 children and adults.   This was the fourth year for this program, which tries to set a world record for the number of people reading the same book on the same day.  Our participation helped break last year's record, when we read Corduroy by Don Freeman.  Individuals are eligible to take part in this program, as well, and can enter their info in Jumpstart's online entry form to be counted as participants.

Read For the Record was featured on MSNBC and other media sources.  Check out the video below for more details and save the date to participate in next year's event!

Author Spotlight: Jeff Kinney - Miss Meemee Recommends Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney, a Great Tween Read!

Miss Meemee recommends The Diary of a Wimpy Kid:  Greg Heffley's Journal by Jeff Kinney.  This book is the first in the Wimpy Kid series, which has been a runaway best seller.  The fourth book, Dog Days, will be released on October 12th, 2009.
The book description in the Charleston County Public Library catalog reads, " Greg records his sixth grade experiences in a middle school where he and his best friend, Rowley, undersized weaklings amid boys who need to shave twice daily, hope just to survive, but when Rowley grows more popular, Greg must take drastic measures to save their friendship."
The author, Jeff Kinney, is also the creator of a popular online educational game site for kids, Poptropica (http://www.poptropica.com).  According to his author bio on the Wimpy Kid website (http://www.wimpykid.com), Kinney discovered that he wanted to be a cartoon artist while in college and originally published first The Diary of a Wimpy Kid online on another popular children's educational website, Funbrain (http://www.funbrain.com), in daily installments (Click this link to read online: http://www.funbrain.com/journal/Journal.html?ThisJournalDay=1&ThisPage=1).

Author Spotlight: Christopher Paul Curtis

Christopher Paul Curtis (J Curtis) is an award-winning author who writes historical fiction and humorous tales for kids.

His second children's novel, Bud, Not Buddy, was the first book to win both the Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Award.  Curtis, a native of Flint, Michigan, modeled characters in Bud, Not Buddy on his grandfathers, one who was a Depression-era bandleader, and the other who was a Negro Baseball League pitcher.  Click here for more bio info and fun facts about Christopher Paul Curtis from his publisher's website!

Miss Meemee recommends Elijah of Buxton.  The CCPL catalog description of this book reads, "In 1859, eleven-year-old Elijah Freeman, the first free-born child in Buxton, Canada, which is a haven for slaves fleeing the American south, uses his wits and skills to try to bring to justice the lying preacher who has stolen money that was to be used to buy a family's freedom."
